Food hygiene By food hygiene we mean all the hygienic measures you can take with regard to food, such as critical selection and inspection of food and taking the right nutritional supplements to compensate for any deficiencies. Water hygiene There is no problem with drinking tap water in Western Europe and North America. In all other areas, however, you should take measures to make the water safe to drink. Water can be contaminated with: microorganisms such as protozoa (parasitic single-celled organisms), bacteria and viruses. chemical pollution from, for example, agricultural chemicals and heavy metals. The microorganisms can cause infectious gastrointestinal diseases in particular. Diarrhoea is the most common problem.
