Minor accidents can soon happen. While travelling, when you are practising outdoor sports or even at home in the kitchen. It is therefore essential to always have a first aid kit handy. In a warm and humid climate in the (sub) tropics, in particular, small wounds can quickly become infected. Proper care of wounds is always essential. A high temperature is a sure sign that you may be infected with an infectious disease (e.g. malaria). We therefore advise always carrying a thermometer when travelling.

Another aspect is that healthcare facilities in the country of destination are often not up to the standard of those at home. Scarcity of – often unsterile – needles, syringes and other medical equipment that penetrate the skin increases the risk of infectious diseases such as AIDS and hepatitis B. It is therefore sensible to take an extensive set of equipment with you in addition to a first aid kit.

Tick tweezers are an absolute must. In the Netherlands, 1 tick in 4 is infected with the Lyme bacterium.

TROPICARE TIP:
When removing ticks, NEVER do the following: anaesthetise the tick with ether/alcohol, cigarette ends, etc; this results in an accelerated release of harmful bacteria!
