Biting and stinging insects are not only irritating; they can also transfer a number of sometimes serious infectious diseases, including:
  • malaria (almost all (sub) tropical destinations)
  • yellow fever (large parts of Tropical Africa, South America)
  • dengue, also referred to as dandy fever (Latin America, Southeast Asia)
People generally use malaria tablets to prevent malaria. These give good, but NOT full protection. Every year, more than a million people die from malaria. There is currently no vaccine or medicine for dengue. You therefore need to prevent mosquito bites as far as possible.

TROPICARE TIP:
The malaria mosquito is only active in the evening and at night; the dengue mosquito primarily during the day. So protect yourself continuously!

Golden rules
These are Tropenzorg’s three golden rules for preventing mosquito bites:
  1. wear light-coloured, finely-woven clothing (long-sleeved shirt, long trousers, socks, closed shoes
  2. apply a strong insect repellent containing 30-50% DEET to uncovered skin
  3. sleep under a good quality mosquito net, preferably impregnated.
